This is why GDM starts at a displayed resolution of 1024x768 and then
switches to 1600x1200 after you login.
Since 1600x1200 is validated with the h/v settings and this will cause
a virtual desktop of 1600x1200, it is probably best to just force the screen
to 1600x1200:
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
This will prevent any desktop components from getting confused about
where to put their objects on the screen.
