I forgot in a hurry, that Permedia and Permedia2 aka PGX32 (misleading
Sun brand, because they had _nothing_ to do with all the other [Ati
based] PGX_nn cards {PGX8/PGX24 onboard/PGX64 card and onboard} ...
... that these Permedia/PGX32 were also produced by 3DLabs for some
time (after an aquisition).
Of course for these I _did_ have a functioning Xorg ddx with
acceleration, namely debugged glint.
So my statement that my alternatives could not drive any card from
3DLabs was not correct. The PGX32 did work via a modified glint.

wsfb - on the other hand - was not able to do that (at all). I never
got it functioning on _anything_ else, but m64. The XVR-100 would come
close, but the root-window would be garbage and then the box would
freeze.
No other card would work (on Solaris). On BSD and Linux it is only
therefore more useful, because there kernel support exists for
specific Sun cards, to which the console drivers there are linked
against.

wsfb had another (worse) issue on Solaris: It only started Xorg on the
Simba PCI bridge, hence on your Ultra 10 (coincidence, that you had
exactly that machine for testing [as well as on the identical Ultra
5]). And otherwise only (with src modifications in Xorg) on the
Blade100/150.
But on not much, probably nothing else I had tried back then. Because
it would always SIGSEGV or SIGBUS during initialization of the old
Xorg pre 1.5 userland PCI code.

That's just for the archives.
Maybe some interested person is reading this in 200 years.
