This response clued me into removing my ".mozilla" directory by renaming it to
".mozilla.out". Low and behold FFb2 starts up where I can see all. No black windows.
Now to study both prefs.js files to see the difference.

To get FF5b2 working with the current ".mozilla" directory I had to edit my
"prefs.js" file and change"
From
user_pref("layers.acceleration.force-enabled", true);
To
user_pref("layers.acceleration.force-enabled", false);
So accelerated graphics isn't yet working in FF5b2.
