Is there a way to correct this? Should I go back the an earlier driver
where there was no problem?

Does "earlier driver" mean the 280.13 driver bundled in Solaris 11
or some other version you downloaded from nvidia.com?

The "earlier driver" means 290.06, which ran without any errors.

In the Solaris 11 release notes you will see a recommendation
to disable the bitmap console mode if you want to use a
driver from nvidia.com. Set console=force-text.

As shown below. console is set to text. This is a carry over from the old
Opensolaris days.
