SACP *SACP Gauteng Province Media Statement, 21 October 2010* *Launch of the 2010 Red October Campaign*The SACP Gauteng Province will be launching its Provincial Red October Campaign on 24 October 2010 in Vosloorus (Ekurhuleni). The National Theme for the campaign is *"Financing Development - with and for the workers and the poor"*. In pursuance of this objective, the provincial campaign will be anchored around the following immediate tasks:
*Advocating for a new growth path by transforming developmental finance*The Launch of the 2010 Red October Campaign comes after a successful National General Council of the ANC, which reaffirmed the need for a new growth path within the context of a developmental state, which should drive our developmental agenda.
As the SACP, we were inspired by the realization of the NGC that growth without job creation, skills development and environmental protection is not sustainable. In class terms, such a shift amounts to a resounding victory for the working class and the poor.
Our task is therefore to transform the financial sector to align its funding to the government's five priorities. It is our duty to ensure that banks serve our people and that there is a deliberate investment in infrastructural development, consequently creating decent and sustainable jobs. Ordinary people should have access to financial services.
*Waging a fight against all forms of evictions*The rate at which working class communities are being evicted from their homes has reached alarming proportions, with commercial banks being the main culprits. We have also noted with concern that in most instances, those that are evicted are not provided with alternative accommodation. It is also common knowledge that the working class and the poor were the hardest hit by the recent economic recession, exacerbating their already distressed conditions. Whilst there are bailouts for business, there are clearly no bailouts for ordinary people.
This campaign will therefore be focusing on banks to stop evicting people without providing alternative accommodation and also calling for the intervention of government in this regard. We will also be calling upon the banks to reinvest in communities from which they make their profits.
*2011 Local Government elections*The SACP in the Province has activated its elections machinery preparing for the 2011 local government elections to ensure an overwhelming victory for the ANC.These elections are a key platform that we can use to change the lives of our people for the better.
As we mobilize communities to vote for the ANC in the 2011 local government elections, we shall insist on the deployment of best cadres so as to deal with persisting service delivery challenges in this sphere of government. After all, as the SACP, our struggle is to defend the poor and the most vulnerable in society.
