I specifically remember watching the 20h00 news bulletin, when first
encountering the theatrical exchanges in parliament about a supposedly
derogatory word used in parliament. Initially I thought it was a joke as the
word Darkie is predominantly used in townships, urban areas even Sandton for
that matter. The word darkie is casually used by Africans to refer to a
black person to avoid the consistent usage of "umuntu omnyama" they mean the
same thing. I have not heard any white person rant about "ingamla" which
means a white person in township "lingo"; one could say they are antonyms.
Now the Minister of Higher Education, Cde. Blade Nzimande was simply
illustrating the negative perceptions which are still highly entrenched in
white communities about blacks and their failure to administrate government.
The word Darkie was not used to refer to blacks in the literal sense, but
it was demonstrating the derogatory attitude which is still received by
blacks in government from white opposition parties, placing doubt on
government whether it succeeds or it fails. The debate in this instance was
about the basic education department and the results which came out this
year for the class of 2010.
Such antagonism is expected of the DA given their inherent antagonistic
nature towards the current government. The DA of course in their lily white
castles can never fault or fail South Africa and hence we saw the "open air
toilets" debacle and still see slumps for black people located right across
posh lavish suburbs in Cape Town. Mazibuko is a bright young girl of course
and clearly with an equally bright future in SA Politics. She has been
privileged to get a decent education in UCT and her abilities and traits
have cushioned her in the ranks of the DA.
However what does she represent as a young black woman in the current
conjuncture and more importantly what role has she been given to play within
the DA. This begs the question of, what role do blacks play generally in the
DA. Do they simple affirm the racial tones of DA and prejudice against the
majority of our people in areas where the DA leads and administrates; or are
they a case of Irish coffee foam, white with sprinkles of black particles at
the top. Her ignorance on the term exposes the inability of blacks to
transform the DA. It exposes the inferiority complex which most blacks in
the DA suffer from due to the master -slave configuration mentality which
still exists in their ranks- vehemently so.
The word is used in Kwaito songs, Hip-hop, Local house tracks for that
matter, dialogue in drama series' and soapies you only find probably on SABC
1 and 2 which cater for the working class and the poor; a constituency the
DA alienates in the Western Cape! So therefore one can only conclude that
the well polished Lindiwe Mazibuko has minimised her exposure to such a
derogatory life and hence the word seems alien and foreign even derogatory
to her.
Should the rest of South Africans who see no problem with the word worry
that they see no evident insult? The Minister of Higher Education is a
leader of an organisation representing the working class and the poor and
such casual language or word comes naturally; this is the distinction
between laptop officials of political organisations who more often than not,
rely on statistics and surveys done on their behalf about the state of our
people and activists that really seem to be in touch with the ground. Maybe
we should invite Lindiwe Mazibuko to a rally or door-to-door campaign in
areas where the word darkies is still used.
This is the very same constituency being failed in the Western Cape by a
woman who has proven on a preponderance of probabilities that she has no
interest in uplifting the lives of people who have the same skin colour as
Lindiwe. Many have came out attacking Lindiwe, but we should really
sympathise and worry as to how many other black youngsters wither away in
the illusions of neo-liberal thought. How many other young black South
Africans have unconsciously blocked themselves out of communities where the
word is used- where such communities are still trapped in the pitfalls of
poverty and glance at their television screens, (that is if they have )to
admire young black women like Mazibuko who depict a picture of success to
many. Is this the New generation Darkie that society is producing, one that
wishes to forget that her fellow darkies exist in Langa, Gugulethu, Qunu,
Kwamashu, Ntuzuma, Soweto, Katlehong? A darkie which cringes at the word
Darkie itself?
This reminds me of a very derogatory term which was used to describe darkies
in the US which lived in the House of the Master, House Nigger.....ever so
loyal to the master at times, sacrificing the niggers on the farm working
outside just to look good to the Master! Are these the Pitfalls of Darkie
Consciousness......u tell me Lindiwe.
