*NUMSA SALUTES COMMANDANTE FIDEL CASTRO* *19 April 2011*
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) salutes Cuban revolutionary and Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban revolution Cde Fidel Castro Ruz on his resignation as a leader and General Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (CCP) due to long age and health. Cde Castro’s resignation is not a threat to the Socialist project in Cuba and Latin America broadly. We are pleased that the Cuban revolution and CCP is in good capable hands of tried and tested leaders of our dearest CCP in Cuba. We salute Cde Castro for leading one of the most inspiring revolutions in the 20th century against the backdrop of US imperialist aggression. Cde Castro survived countless assassination attempts US government and sponsored terrorists. Even in retirement he will forever remain a threat to US imperialism and the rotten world order as perpetuated by Capitalism. To the South African working class and the poor, Cde Castro remains a symbol of hope in their daily struggles against unequal distribution of wealth at the point of production or the struggle against reversing the persisting inequalities in our country. The Cuban revolution that was led by Cde Castro continues to thrive in the midst of an economic blacked imposed by the US and its allies which is an attempt that wanted to collapse the economic path taken by the Cuban people – Socialism. The Cuban revolution has been marvelous and achieved a lot for the Cuban people. This revolution has attained free education for the Cuban people, free access to health care for all and ensured that no Cuban goes to bed on a empty stomach. NUMSA salutes Cde Castro for his selfless contribution to the struggle of the oppressed people of the world. We owe our freedom and democracy to the selfless and unconditional support the Cubans made to our freedom and democracy. We remember the Cuban combatants that perished in the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, Angola, which necessitated the liberation of Namibia and our own country – South Africa. Cde Castro remains a living proof and example that indeed an alternative system to the barbaric and immoral system of Capitalism indeed exists, and that alternative system is Socialism. As a revolutionary gesture to Cde Castro’s and Cuba’s contribution to our struggle for freedom and liberation, we call on the ANC-led government to call for an end of the economic blockade against Cuba imposed by US.
