POPCRU support Public Servants in Botswana on their demand for a living wage
POPCRU has supported the umbrella of Trade Unions in Botswana under the
Botswana
Federation of Public Sector Unions [BOFEPUSU] on their 16% wage hike and
continuing public service strike.
It is unfortunate that most government in most instances are forcing workers to
take the route of downing their tools on the basis of their intransigence and
disrespect to principles of engagement and collective bargaining, opting to
violate Collective Bargaining Agreements by resorting to intimidations and
empty
threats.
POPCRU deplores the unlawful acts of intimidation against the Union members as
meted by the government.
As POPCRU we interacted with Botswana Trade Unions on the occasion of the
International Labour Relations Symposium held in 2009 at Gaborone under the
Theme "Breaking New Grounds", and also during the recent Regional meeting under
auspices of Public Service International and we shared experiences and the
challenges public servants encounter in the Southern African Development
Community [SADC].
Arguments that salary increases shall be effected as and when the economy
recovers is unlettered as it negates the implications of rising cost of living
on workers and the poor.
We are calling on the government to meet Trade Union leaders as led by BOSETU,
BOPEU, BTU, BLLAWU and NALCGPWU and also come to its senses and offer what
workers are demanding.
An injury to one is an injury to all!
Forward with the Unity of Workers across borders!
