Cape Town, June 23 (Prensa Latina) More than 500 South African children were imprisoned for crimes from April 2010 to March 2011 and another 800 were under correctional supervision. Juvenile criminal law that was passed in 2008, rose from seven to 10 years the minimum age for a child to be punished. The data reflect a slight decrease over the same period a year earlier, according to statistics from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in its report on criminal treatment of minors. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in Africa presented the report of the NPA to Correctional Services Committee of the European Parliament that met here. "Affirming the principles of restorative justice, responsibility for children and accountability for the crimes", were defended at the meeting.
