Hip hop star Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye's ongoing court case on charges of mowing down and killing four schoolchildren during an alleged drag race has hit him hard in his pocket.

This was revealed by the singer's business manager, Jeffrey Marhanele, and other music industry executives connected to the artist.

"He has not had an income for a while. If you are in business and you lose your income for a year, it doesn't matter whether you run a tuckshop or not. It's serious," said Marhanele.

According to Marhanele, the Soweto-based singer, who shot to fame with his smash hit Ndikhokhele, earned more than R50 000 a week from music shows alone. Maarohanye received an average of three bookings a week, getting between R20 000 and R25 000 from each gig. This does not include his earnings from endorsements.

The court case came just after the rising star had released his third album, Fresh Air.

"The album didn't even take off," lamented Marhanele.

In addition to being shunned by the music industry, Maarohanye has also had to suffer the ignominy of being kicked out of South Africa's premier gospel music awards, the Crown Gospel Awards.

Rumour also had it that Maarohanye was so deep in debt, he could not even afford to pay his clothing accounts.

He has also had to bear the brunt of widespread public anger, with members of the public hurling profanities at him each time he appears in court.

In his profile, Maarohanye describes the "Jub Jub brand" as synonymous with someone who never backs down and never lets any challenge deter him from his God-given talents and divine path.

"It does not matter what intensity and length it could last for, Jub Jub will outshine any adversity," he says.

But Marhanele said the court case had taken an emotional toll on his client and his family. "It's difficult times for him, while his family have taken strain too." - The Star
