SPORTS administrator Malesela Maleka has been appointed head [of] mission of Team South Africa for the 2012 London Olympics.

Maleka will be the head of administration of the team, which South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam hopes will win 12 medals.

Sowetan has learnt that Maleka was in London last week as part of the South African team that attended a meeting to prepare for the Olympics.

Maleka rose to prominence in sports circles as a cricket player at the Vaal University of Technology. His rise continued when he was elected president of University Sport South Africa after taking the baton from popular Limpopo medic Dr Malumbete Ralethe.

Maleka serves on one of the subcommittees of the Federation of International University Sport (Fisu). Maleka, who is also the president of Basketball SA, works for the SACP as a national media officer.

Meanwhile, Ralethe has been re-elected as an executive member of Fisu at its congress in Shenzhen, China.
