"This march forms part of the strategy to exert pressure to Xstrata ruling
oligarchy to accede to workers demands," said the National Union of
Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) in a statement.

"This march will be taking place amid the impromptu arrest of Numsa members by
[the] SA Police Service under the instruction of one of Xstrata's key
executives."

The union said the members had since been released by a "sober" Rustenburg
magistrate.

It accused police of being used to deny workers their constitutional right to
assemble or embark on protected strikes.

The march to the Xstrata's office in Melrose Arch will be led by Numsa
president Cedric Gina and Congress of SA Trade Unions second deputy president
Zingiswa Losi.

The gathering would hand over a memorandum of demands.

Xstrata was not immediately available for comment.
