*Basic education is a problem* / Sadtu says the education system needs a revolution/ *Karin Labuschagne, Radio Jacaranda, Pretoria, 25 November 2011*The problem with South Africa's education system lies in basic education and not higher education.
Sadtu President Thobile Ntola stressed at their National General Council, that it needed to be addressed to see the revolution in education in our country.
Ntola mentioned that a definite trend could be seen in the pass rates of students, when comparing on whether they had indeed received basic education. Without being taught the basics, students could not perform as well in school.
He also said that they could not expect of "old" teachers to "produce a new person", mentioning that the education system needed younger teachers.
SACP's general secretary Blade Nzimande hinted that from a capitalist perspective, perhaps the call for nationalisation might rather be to help cover indebted BEE's.
Blade also mentioned that proceeds that were derived from BEE's were not being reinvested into the economy, but rather "being consumed on flashy lifestyles and opulence".
