*Education system slated* *Musa Mohamed, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 25 November 2011*JOHANNESBURG - Blade Nzimande wants SA's education system geared towards producing "cadres for the national democratic revolution".
Nzimande, the Higher Education Minister and SA Communist Party general secretary, charged that the country's education system was dysfunctional and claimed that education was being "held hostage".
Heclaimed that pupils were "nothing else but commodities to be produced andsold on job market".
He said SA neededteachers who understand their "revolutionary duty" in the education system, which was to produce pupils for the "progressive movement".
"We need educators who understand their revolutionary duty in producing an army of cadres for the National Democratic revolution," Nzimande said.
Speaking at the national general council of the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) meeting in Pretoria yesterday, Nzimande renewed his attack on ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema.
Nzimande described the suspended leader's talk of nationalisation of the mines as hypocritical, saying it was not a "genuine call".
He repeated that Malema'scall for the nationalisation of mines was a sinister move to rescue Black economic empowerment (BEE) beneficiaries who were "in crisis".
"Nationalisation will provide a windfall for some but not for the benefit of the overwhelming majority," he said.
He added that BEE was unsustainable and that many of those involved in BEE deals were "in serious debt".
Nzimande also launched a scathing attack against opponents of the contentious Protection of State Information Bill.
He claimed the media were pursuing a "disinformation campaign" and accused those opposing the Bill of "waging an assault on the government".
Nzimande further claimed that editors were not qualified to decide what information was in the public interest.
"In the case of the media, it means that this (to publish crucial information) is a decision that is made by the editor of a paper that such information is in the public interest," he said.
Nzimande added that opponents of the Bill wanted "a naked state where information is going to be used as a tool to undermine majority rule".
