*YCLSA statement on the commemoration of the life and times of comrade Joe
Slovo*

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) eulogises the
commemoration of the life and times of comrade Joe Slovo which he spent
with dedication in the struggle for political and socio-economic
emancipation of the South African people in general and the working class
in particular even beyond the borders of our Republic.

Being an integral part of the South African Communist Party, as YCLSA we
treat with unwavering dignity the role played by comrade Joe Slovo in
advancing the socialist orientation of the National Democratic Revolution
as a former leader of the YCLSA and as former General Secretary and
National Chairperson of the South African Communist Party.

In this we acknowledge his elaborate intellectual acumen which he help to
acclimatise with his art of writing to make known not only his views, but
the views of the SACP and the ANC in which he also led with distinction.
Albeit his intellectual acumen, both organic and traditional, Slovo did not
pursue the life of white petty-bourgeois-minded academia, nor did he choose
to advance a narrow political agenda which entrenched racially skewed
separate development benefiting a small white minority against the majority
composed mainly of the African working class. He dismembered white
privilege and chose to be numbered and remembered as the champion of
non-racialism, non-sexism, democracy and socialism.

As YCLSA, in Slovo we see the symbol of the struggle for the abolition of
political oppression of one man by another, the elimination of economic
exploitation of one man by another. Our aspirations to build socialism will
forever be cemented by his life and times, we shall continue to draw
lessons from his revolutionary milestones, and we shall continue to
strengthen unity in our beloved SACP and the alliance under the leadership
of the ANC.
