*Young Communists in Gauteng commemorates the life of comrade Joe Slovo*

*Statement for immediate release*

*Thursday, 5 January 2012 *

The Young Communist League of South Africa, YCLSA [uFasimba] in the
province of Gauteng joins the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the
commemoration of the life of the late Comrade Joe Slovo.

A communist, negotiator, strategist and tactician, Comrade Slovo served in
National Consultative Committee of the Congress Alliance leading up to
the *genuine
*Congress of the People in 1955 where the *Freedom Charter*, which he
contributed in drafting, was adopted although he could not attend but
observed from a distance because of the apartheid brutality known as
the *Suppression
of Communism Act* that imposed barbaric restriction and sentences over his
and other communists’ activity.

One of the long standing communist cadres to the front, former SACP Central
Committee Member, General Secretary in the 1980s and National Chairperson
in the early 1990s, Comrade Slovo was involved in the founding of *Umkhondo
weSizwe* which he served as Chief of Staff. Comrade Slovo served in the
Revolutionary Council, as led by the African National Congress (ANC), from
1969 until it was dissolved in the early 1980s. He served as member of the
ANC’s national executive and working committees. From 1994 until he left us
on 6 January 1995 he served as Minister of Housing in South Africa’s first
ever democratically elected government.

Comrade Slovo shall remain one of our greatest inspirations as we advance,
defend and deepen our SACP-led Medium Term Vision as encapsulated in 2007
in the party programme the* South African Road to Socialism. *

Taking place in the context of the very important centennial celebrations
of the ANC, Comrade Joe Slovo’s first commemoration ceremony for 2012 is
arranged as follows.

*Date:* Friday, 6 January 2012

*Arrival time:* From 9:00

*Venue:* Avalon Cemetery, Soweto

Among the very important speakers from the SACP and alliance *as the YCLSA
we will be represented by our National Chairperson Comrade Yershen Pillay.*

As the YCLSA we invite young people to attend and the media to report.
