*SACP Eastern Cape Province Statement, 21 November 2012*** *Strike by Paramedics*The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape Province has noted with great concern the ongoing strike by the workers in the Department of Health, paramedics in particular. We believe this has a direct demeanor on the public health system and therefore harbor a huge potential of compromising the health of the ordinary people in the province as many of the workers and the poor solemnly rely on public healthcare system.
This requires the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape to work in the interest of the people and resolve the matter with high velocity. We are quite disturbed by the department opting for private ambulance companies whilst it has long financial problems. This action by the department will do nothing but plunge both the department of Health and the Provincial Government in more financial problems.
We are calling upon the Department of Health in the Province to withdraw the use of private companies. The Department must work with the trade unions and the entire provincial administration to resolve the strike as a matter of urgency. Opting for private companies will only bring a temporal solution to what is a serious problem and will definitely leave long term consequences.
The speedy resolution of this strike shall be on the interest of everyone in the province. It is the responsibility of the department to make sure that there is stability in the public healthcare system; therefore the department must bring to book the culprits for the non-payment of what is due to workers. We are calling upon the Eastern Cape Department of Health to urgently meet the workers on strike for the speedy resolution of this matter.
As the SACP we are calling for the urgent implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) as the bases for building quality public health system in our country with improved working conditions.
