I still repeat, to all the Alliance partners, take a certain number of comrades even if it is 100 and concentrate on them, educationally, for a period that is between five (05) to ten (10) years. Send a certain number to China, Cuba and some countries. These comrades will be subjected to the ANC discipline wherever they will be, not government's. In between their studies they will attend political classes, either in the country during recesses or in their respective foster countries but through a rotation of facilitators/overseers. Our revolution is going down the drain we need to replant the seeds that are gradually eroded. It is not through rhetoric that this will be done but by taking our own comrades, especially members of the ANC, en-masse to a number of progressive countries to study. I have a belief in comrades (ANC, SACP, COSATU members), regardless of their views in taking our struggle forward. THE CROP THAT WE TAKE TO THESE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT IS REQUIRED BY OUR REVOLUTION. I am a member of the ANC, SACP and COSATU, the only thing I need from these structures is education. It is true that we are not owed anything by these organisations but if we are there willing to take the baton forward and need the proper tools (education) why can't we get it. We will forever cry capitalism while we do not nothing about it. I pause. Mzukisi V. I believe some of them did not even know that they were going to such an environment. They only know Cuba as a caribbean island and what first came to their minds was Cuban cigars. Their behaviour is reflecting the environment they come from. An environment of expensive suites and whisky, which our leaders unashamedly display. Its not the 1st time I hear the honorable Minister complaining about our conduct of South Africans when in Cuba. He was addressing us in one conference and he said how embarrassing most of our students behave when they are in Cuba. Which is why I agree with most comrades that says there must be a criteria and a "mini" political education/consciousness that happens before they leave. Including the contract they must sign which will have "SA Student's Code of Conduct". This also goes to show that there is no much political education happening in our communities. That will put the interest of these kids at a young age to join youth organizations. We are in a Capitalist country and Cuba is not. (And we know what Capitalists do, and the saying that goes" what you rests persists" is evident). Having said this, inside the country this is what is happening: Let me talk from the Labour Movement side. If there is an invite to discuss serious issues that affects workers, people will first look at how much will be the perdiem, and what kind of hotel they will sleeping in. We have had many instances where workers would revolt (though it doesn't go into the media) when the hotel they are having their education is not a five start hotel. These days we say there is no membership education in the trade unions, because there is no money. We refer to lack of money based on that we cannot afford the hotels. Imagine pre- 1994 there were very little resources but education was happening everyday in every space identified. Today there were are better off resource wise than then, but we cannot do education, because of the "high "standards we have put ourselves into. Lastly our comrades that sits on the SETA boards, can kill you if you can say their sitting allowance must go to the coffers of the union. So these kids are learning from the best "us their parents". I am not condoning it, but let is look at the root cause. We are being embarrassed out there. We need to reflect and see how we can reverse this bad behavior. Any way, they have revealed themselves early of what kind of doctors they will be, I do not think the country needs that kind of behaviour from the student doctors, (particularly in a very respected country like Cuba), who will will be expected to serve and sacrifice, working for their own people. The best thing now that they can do, is to apologise to the people and the government of South Africa and the Cuban people and the government alike. "The sense of entitlement and lack of gratitude displayed by these students who come from a country with such high levels of desperate need for higher education, and with limited state resources, is totally unacceptable," Nzimande said in a statement. "I condemn it in the strongest terms." At least 187 students studying medicine in Cuba have embarked on a protest action and a hunger strike, threatening to return to South Africa if their demands were not met. According to the department, the students were demanding US500 (R4439). The students presently receive US200 (R1175) a month. Nzimande said government spent about R500 000 per student over six years for language courses, medical training and living expenses in Cuba. The students' actions threatened opportunities for other deserving South African students to benefit from the long-standing co-operation that existed between the two countries. "If they are demanding something that is a privilege... as if it is a right and threaten to come back home, then maybe they should do just that and open up an opportunity for other equally deserving young people who are thirsty for such opportunities."
