YCLSA happy that Madiba is Well Spirited and Alive

30 April 2013

For Immediate Release

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] would like to thank the
Mandela family and the ANC for allowing South Africans and the world to have a
glimpse of a recovering Nelson Mandela on national and global television and as
confirmation that the 94 year old former President is well spirited and alive.

We support the initiative by the leadership of the ANC to continue to visit
Mandela at his home, and to consistently inform our people on the state of his
health. What the ANC and the family has done will also ensure that South
Africans do not camp outside of his Houghton home with the hope of seeing the
ailing Mandela, and therefore turn this into an act of privilege for some as
has been the case with visits to Mandela.

As the YCLSA, we are baffled by why some people turned this gesture into a
cheap political scoring point, insinuating that the ANC is using this as a
publicity stunt. Mandela belongs to the ANC and the people of our country, and
therefore, his state of health and well-being should never be privatised. Some
of the so-called concerned South Africans were quite, and therefore tacitly
supported the highjacking of Mandela by the Democratic Alliance and Helen
Zille in their attempt to rewrite our history.

Some of the people who righteously condemned the ANC includes media houses who
camped outside Mandela's house, whilst others have 'prepared for the
eventuality' and readied their media houses to cross live from Houghton to
report Mandela's death and can never let the family and the old man to rest.

Some of this cynics have also in the passed questioned the veracity of reports
from The Presidency on Mandela's health, and wanted our people to live in doubt
on whether Mandela is dead or alive.

The ANC President, together with the family, should not apologise for the visit
or for letting our people know that Mandela is well and recovering from illness.

We should accept that Mandela is ageing, therefore frail and we should never be
ashamed to see him in the manner we saw him on national television. In his own
words, Mandela had said that he is "not sick but ageing". Beyond all the
immortal acts that Mandela has done, he is, after all, human.
