*YCLSA Gauteng PEC Statement*

The Third Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the Young Communist
League [uFasimba] in the province of Gauteng convened in its Eleventh
Plenary Session this past weekend, in Johannesburg.

The PEC assessed the state of the organisation in line with the themes for
2013 as the year of the district as declared by the South African Communist
Party (SACP) and an epoch marking year in political education and
ideological training as declared by the YCLSA.

As a standard procedure for YCLSA meetings, the PEC analysed the political
situation in the province. The PEC extensively focused on the trade union
movement in line with this month as workers month and following the
celebrations on workers’ struggles on Workers Day, 1 May.

Building on the successful PEC Lekgotla held in February and the Provincial
Council held in April the PEC consolidated a thoroughgoing programme to
build the YCLSA strong in the province both qualitatively and
quantitatively. At present we have just over 7500 members in the province,
making Gauteng the largest YCLSA province by membership. Our objective is
to reach a target to 20000 members by October 2014.

*Political education and ideological training *

In order to achieve quality out of our membership quantity we shall be
rolling out provincial and district political schools, branch inductions
and political schools as well as discussion forums and seminars throughout.
This theoretical work will be complemented with practical work through
campaigns.

Our districts will be meeting from 10-11 May to take the work forward under
the leadership of the PEC. From 17-19 May we shall hold district political
schools across the province, followed by the Provincial Political School in
the last week of the month, coupled with a Provincial Council. We will
intensify our political education and ideological training programme in
Youth Month, June, which will be how we will celebrate youth contribution
in the liberation struggle.

*The launch of Moses Kotane Brigade *

The PEC highly welcomed the naming of Gauteng Province’s African National
Congress (ANC) led volunteer election brigade after comrade Moses Kotane.
Kotane was the General Secretary of the SACP and one of the outstanding
leaders of the ANC. Kotane played a pivotal role in building the alliance
between the SACP, ANC and the progressive trade union movement. He served
the movement with loyalty and zeal, making himself available whenever he
was called upon to do so. An internationalist who fought for national
liberation, gender emancipation and socialism, Kotane was buried at the
Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

The naming of the ANC-led volunteer election machinery represents to the
YCLSA one of the important innovations the ANC has ever adopted in the
province. We will use this as a platform to build the alliance.

The Moses Kotane brigade was launched this past Sunday, 5 May 2013 in
Johannesburg and addressed by alliance leaders as led by President Jacob
Zuma. YCLSA members participated in the launch in their individual capacity
as members and leaders of ANC branches and elections teams as well as in
their capacity as Young Communists. Our PEC also participated in the launch
and congratulated the ANC for leadership provided.

We devote ourselves to delivering an overwhelming electoral victory for the
ANC led alliance in the same way as we shall be fighting against elitist
groupings and the capitalist class who want to monopolise the achievements
of our liberation struggle for their private benefit.

*Trade union movement *

The PEC reflected on the state and politics found, acknowledged that there
are serious challenges and resolved to commission a study on the
developments and transformations occurring in the trade union movement with
Gauteng as the centre stage. The outcome of the study, titled ‘What role
should progressive trade unions play in a national democratic revolution
and the struggle for socialism?’ will be used to guide the engagement of
our cadres in the trade union movement as well as to provide leadership to
young workers.
