*YCLSA dismayed by the Democratic Alliance’s political point-scoring over
crime statistics *

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the Western Cape
welcomes the recent move and intervention by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa
in combating violent crimes on drug trade and gangsterism in the Western
Cape. Fighting crime is one of the five apex priorities of the ANC
government.

The YCLSA commends the increase in deployment of police operations, which
has led to significant decrease in the number of murders. Since the
beginning of June 2013 fifty four (54) firearms had been seized in
Mannenberg.

YCLSA strongly condemns and warns against the DA’s cheap political
point-scoring with crime as it threatens peace and stability efforts in the
Western Cape Province. YCLSA cannot allow campaigns which are aimed at
discrediting and disempowering the police in the Western Cape.

The recently released crime statistics are a stark reminder of the
pervasive nature of crime within the province, particularly the City of
Cape Town.

YCLSA is calling on the DA in the Western Cape to give attention to all
hotspot areas and stop discriminating against previously disadvantaged
communities based on race by being selective in their actions. There are
more people who are being killed in Nyanga than anywhere else in the
Western Cape.

Tackling the scourge of gangsterism, drug abuse and violent crime needs
support of all South Africans. We call on all our communities to take a
stand on abuse of substances that include liquor and drugs, as these often
lead to crime incidences.
