SACP Central Committee final briefing: 

Press Conference Today, 1 June 2014 (12h30)

 

Sunday, 1 June 2014 - Johannesburg 

 

The quarterly SACP Central Committee Plenary Session is underway in
Braamfontein, Johannesburg. It is scheduled to adjourn by 12h15 this
afternoon. The Central Committee is the Party's highest decision-making body
in between National Congresses which convene once every five years. The
Central Committee has been in session since Friday, 30 May 2014, to assess
the Party Programme: developing SACP as the vanguard of the working class,
advancing and deepening the National Democratic Revolution as the road to -
and leading the struggle for - Socialism. 

 

The Central Committee analysed and discussed:

*         the outcome of the Fifth democratic general election, and, linked
with this, the strategic and policy content of our second, more radical
phase of transition; 

*         the role and influence of the working class and Party
organisation, its leaders and members in all key sites of struggle and
power, namely the State, Community, Economy, Workplace, Ideological terrain,
International terrain, and the Environment;  

*         developments in the mining sector in general and the Rustenburg
platinum belt in particular; 

*         the state of the labour movement in general and COSATU in
particular; 

*         the state of the South African and world economy and consequent
socio-political relations; 

 

The Central Committee is currently completing its discussions on
Organisational Policy, the state of Party organisation, the Alliance and the
Mass Democratic Movement as led by the ANC with focus on the unfolding
historical period and the tasks that lie ahead.   

 

The outcome of the Central Committee will be announced in a public statement
at a Press Conference scheduled as follows:

The Press Conference will be addressed by SACP National Officials:

 

*         General Secretary Comrade Blade Nzimande, re-appointed Minister of
Higher education and Training; 

*         First Deputy General Secretary Comrade Jeremy Cronin, re-appointed
Deputy Minister of Public Works; 

*         Second Deputy General Secretary Comrade Solly Mapaila, one of the
full-time Central Committee members; 

*         National Chairperson Comrade Sezeni Zokwane, new Minister of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; 

*         Deputy National Chairperson Comrade Thulas Nxesi, re-appointed
Minister of Public Works; and 

*         National Treasurer Comrade Joyce Moloi-Moropa, Member of
Parliament.
