Women - Servile Objects or Visible Pillar of Revolutionary Struggles?? Phel Parkies, Member of SACP Central Committee, 10 August 2014 Historical accuracy attests to the fact that any writer or historian finds it hard to discount the role and place of women in all revolutionary struggles, but doing so will be at his peril. This includes those scores of women who are ruthlessly killed by wars foisted by men in different parts of the world, and those who stood up against the opprobrious barbaric system of apartheid colonialism with its calamitous rule. This article is fired by all those and currently affected by sordid decisions made by selfish leaders. I want to dedicate this piece to those women and children killed in GAZA - Palestine by the barbaric act of the Israel forces despite their desperate call for harmony, peace and freedom. The wanton crisis in GAZA is inhuman and barbaric. Only for this reason, South Africa cannot be neutral in whatever way. Israel enjoys the protection of the imperial power US which is not genuine about the crisis, for the mere fact that US called for ceasefire, but continued to say Israel has a right to defend its self. This was a glaring political hypocrisy of the US government. History affirms the critical role of women in South African politics, Iran 1979 revolution, and the triumph of October Revolution of 1917, just to mention the few. However we need to aver that post 1994 we still need heightened struggle for gender equality. This is not only about the representation of women in positions of power and institutions, much as this is important. The total emancipation of women will not be complete without asserting the exploited women at the point of production and economic activity, women who carry the brunt of the exploiting class. This includes susceptible victims of abuse of authority be it in public, or corporate. The capacity of women not as sexual beetles or objects, but potential other human being with capacity to impetuously perform duties assigned, they deserve to be hired based on merit. We need to inoculate our society from terrible disease in our institutions of men with authority who expect women to resign themselves for sexual favours before they could be employed. Women should refuse to be passage of gratuitous looting by masters of grand larceny, rather risk marginalization, humiliation and isolation. Our young girls have a challenge to focus more on education and skills that will take our country forward without celebrating the debauched lifestyle of the rich and glamorous. Leaders ought to be genuine about this regardless who does it. This is not a romantic appeal for leaders to be immaculate, but a genuine allegorical expression. It is therefore central to accentuate the perspective of three interrelated contradiction of our society that of class, gender and race question. And each of these not being emphasised more at the expense of the other, in the context of the radical phase of the NDR. We need to define the ideological needs of this phase in the context of heightened gender struggle going forward. This goes along with the dire need to multiply and emulate abo Dora Tama, and Ruth First and many others by young women political activists of today. In manner and appearance, we still need women of substance, women whose discipline will never be questionable, with ideological and political clarity, women whose loyalty cannot be bought by whatever means what so ever. We need this caliber of women cadres in the SACP, ANC and COSATU and the entire movement - women of systematic independent thinking, reliable and consistent on principle with resilience to tergiversation politics and valorisation of the organization. This cream of phalanx calibre of women cadres should not be enamoured or favoured with money, but the well being of the toiling masses and transformation of the society. All, as cadres of this revolutionary movement whose existence goes beyond our span of live, are obliged to create, deliberately and consciously, this pool or cream of critical mass, so as others fall by the side ways, others sell out, others get demoralized and others die, surely we shall be in a good position to say confidently - the revolution is secured and guarded against all forms of grisly schemes against it from outside and inside. We are captives of our revolution and it ought to be compulsive to temper with hard core vestiges of apartheid colonialism and its economic growth path. -- -- You are subscribed.
