History should be compulsory: Zuma

Zongile Mthimkhulu, East Coast Radio, Durban, 3 October 2014

President Jacob Zuma says it is high time the discussion of history becoming
a compulsory school subject is taken forward.

He has made the comments at a SADTU congress currently underway in Boksburg
on Gauteng's East Rand.

Zuma has also called on educators to encourage the learning of indigenous
languages in the country.

Director of Language and Planning at UKZN Dr Langa Khumalo agrees with Zuma,
saying the call is long overdue.

"History is vitally important. It keeps [things] into perspective. It makes
us avoid some of the mistakes that we have made before. To say that people
should not learn their history, should not learn their history is actually
destroying them because a language is a repository of history," he said.
