South Africa Communists Call to Strengthen Cuba Solidarity Campaign Sc/tgj/jvj, Prensa Latina, Cuba, 7 October 2014 It's time for progressive forces in South Africa to strengthen unity in an intensive campaign of international solidarity in favor of Cuba, said today Benson Ngqentsu, chief of the South African Communist Party in the southern province of Western Cape. We must ensure this international solidarity crusade in defense of the Cuban revolution has a practical sense and a concrete impact on the working class internationally and impact in Washington, stressed Ngqentsu. We believe that this global campaign is also inextricably linked to the immediate struggle against poverty, inequality and unemployment, capitalism and especially against imperialism, the highest stage of capitalism, said the South African Communist leader. Internationally known as the Cuban Five, Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René were arrested in 1998 and in a biased trial in Miami, Florida, sentenced to long terms involving life sentences and verdicts of 19 and 15 years. Fernando and René already served their sentences and returned to Cuba with their families. International figures, civil associations and government delegates have supported the cause of the Cuban Five and remember that they only controlled the activity of extremist groups trying to anticipate their actions and gathering evidence about possible attacks against the island.
