YCLSA Press Statement, 24 March 2015

YCLSA supports COSATU-affiliated unions demanding a 10% wage hike

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] supports public
service unions affiliated to the Congress of South African Trade Unions
[COSATU] in demanding a 10% wage hike and the increase of housing allowance
from R900 to R3000.

We call on the employer, our government, to come with a new offer that will
satisfy workers and end the negotiations before the end of the month. The
10% wage increase is justified considering that the prices of basic
commodities have went up, the price of petrol is expected to go up by R2 in
April and Eskom has applied to raise electricity tariffs by 25.3% from July
1.

Public service workers are the hardest working employees and government
needs to show its appreciation by giving worker what they want. We call on
both parties to find common ground as a matter of urgency so as to avoid a
strike.

As the YCLSA we have confidence that COSATU will continue to fight for
workers and their demands. We have faith that SADTU, NEHAWU, POPCRU, DENOSA,
SAMA, SASAWU and PAWUSA are championing the interests of workers in these
negotiations.
