SADTU congratulates POPCRU on successful 8th National Congress

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) wishes to congratulate
the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) on its successful 8th
National Congress. The Congress was united and we believe that all other
COSATU affiliates can take lessons from them.

We welcome the fact that the congress reaffirmed the decisions that had been
taken by the CEC of COSATU in relation to organizational matters. The
delegates made it clear that the unity of the federation and that of the
alliance is sacrosanct. In essence, the wedge drivers that have been working
hard to divide the workers have been defeated.

The resolutions of the Congress came at an opportune moment when the former
General Secretary of COSATU Zwelinzima Vavi has once more, proven to us why
he had to be expelled from the Federation. The congress made it clear that
no one individual can be above the collective. It has been wildly reported
in the media that Vavi made an apology to former President Thabo Mbeki for
COSATU's backing of President Zuma to replace Mbeki as President at the
ANC's collective conference in 2007 in Polokwane.

Vavi is once again proving to us that he is naturally a divisive individual
who has an exaggerated sense of self. It is just not correct for Vavi to
suggest that the support we gave to the President in 2007 as the workers was
as a result of his personal influence on us. The reality is that it was a
collective decision that we took and we all stood by it, it was by no means
Vavi's personal pet project as he now wants us believe.

It is us who should be apologizing to the workers for believing at some
stage that Vavi could lead us with honesty and unite the workers; all that
he has done is the direct opposite of what our intention was with his
election. This is a mistake that we will strive to ensure does not hinder
the work of the federation.

We want to urge the workers and the public in general not to be misled by
Vavi who now wants to present himself as hero who is being victimized. We do
not regret the decision of the CEC to expel him and we will continue to
support it.

We welcome the new leadership of POPRCU and we urge them to always carry out
the mandate of members.
