Morning Star.png Palestine: Israel Swipes 370 Acres for New Illegal Settlement James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 21 January 2016 Israel announced yesterday it was grabbing 370 acres of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank for an illegal settlement. The Co-ordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a branch of the Defence Ministry, announced that the area near Jericho would be declared "state land." Israeli Army Radio had already revealed the plan on Tuesday, saying the land was north of the illegal Israeli settlement of Almog and had been used by settlers for 20 years. Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now said it was Israel's largest land expropriation in the West Bank since it grabbed nearly 1,000 acres of in 2014 - drawing international condemnation. "The government's decision is another step on the way to destroy the possibility for a two-state solution," Peace Now said. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities demolished the half-built home of a Palestinian in occupied east Jerusalem, the Ma'an news agency reported. Owner Samir Nassar said Jerusalem council bulldozers burst into the site at 4am "without prior notice" at 4am. Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) said on Tuesday Israeli prison authorities had begun forcing medical treatment on hunger-striking Palestinian journalist Muhammad al-Qiq in violation of medical ethics. Mr Qiq is said to be close to death after refusing to eat for 55 days in protest against his detention without trial.
