Police Will Face Trial for 1983 Killing

The Morning Star, London, 10 January 2016

South Africa announced plans yesterday to charge four members of the
apartheid-era police with the 1983 murder of a young woman.

Nokuthula Simelane disappeared while being held by Soweto Special Branch.
She was tortured for weeks at a police barracks in Johannesburg and then at
a farm. Her body was never found.

She had recently graduated from university and was a courier for the
then-banned African National Congress.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said that three of the
four suspects in Ms Simelane's death had applied for amnesty for her
kidnapping from the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission - but
not for her murder.

The fourth suspect will be charged with both kidnapping and murder, he said.

The suspects are due to appear in a Pretoria court on February 26.
