Protesting Pikitup workers expected back at work

Horisani Sithole, SABC, Johannesburg, 10 April 2016

Striking workers at Johannesburg waste management company, Pikitup, are
expected back at work as soon as Sunday night. This after an agreement was
signed between the City of Johannesburg and the Congress of South African
Trade Unions (Cosatu).

None of the demands that South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) had
been calling for were heeded.

The four-week illegal strike resulted in an accumulation of waste, which
posed severe health risks.

"As of tonight (Sunday) workers will return to work. From tomorrow (Monday)
up until Wednesday all parties will go back to the table. The city will have
principles that it would want to present on the salary parity issues that
will be presented to the union. On Wednesday all parties must come back and
say this is what we have agreed upon. The CCMA would still be driving these
engagements," says City of Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for
the Environment and Infrastructure, Matshidiso Mfikoe.
