Pikitup, SAMWU Reach Settlement Ending 'Dirty' Strike Ziyanda Ngcobo, Eyewitness News, Johannesburg, 10 April 2016 The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) says a settlement has been reached in the Pikitup strike. Workers downed tools making calls for better wages and for Pikitup's managing director Amanda Nair to step down. Discussion to resolve the industrial action involving the City of Johannesburg, Pikitup and South African Municipal Workers' Union was held last week. The municipality has announced that they will continue using contracted resources in order to clear the backlog. This will end of weeks of refuse not being collected. The city has welcomed the ending of the strike and says it aims to clear the backlog by the end of this month. Congress of South African Trade Union's Dumisani Dakile says workers have agreed to return to work immediately. "Parties are prepared to go back to work and build what is termed in mediation processes as relationship building exercise to restore relationships." MMC for environmental and infrastructure services Matshidiso Mfikoe has apologised to residents for the health hazard caused by the strike. "We will continue with the contracting services so that by the end of the month we have cleared all the backlog." The CCMA will facilitate further negotiations on salary benchmarking and other issues over the next three days.
