Hands off our president!

The ANC in Mpumalanga has issued an unequivocal message following a meeting
of its provincial executive committee and regional groups: "Hands off our
president".

The provincial structures were meeting following the Constitutional Court's
finding that President Jacob Zuma had failed to uphold the Constitution when
he did not comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's remedial action
regarding payment for the non-security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

"The apology of the President was accepted and our structures are at peace
with that," said Mpumalanga secretary, Mandla Ndlovu. "We are proud of our
branches, that there is not a single branch which decided to break the ranks
and started to jump the gun."

This was a swipe at some Gauteng branches that came out last week saying
they wanted Zuma to step down or for the party to take disciplinary action
against him.

The ANC's Sefako Makgatho branch in the Greater Johannesburg region called
on Zuma to resign or face the party's integrity commission or the national
disciplinary committee.

Gauteng doing the right-wing thing

At the party's Liliesleaf Farm branch's political dialogue held in Midrand,
Johannesburg, there appeared to be a consensus that other branches should
follow the example of the Sefako Makgatho branch.

The ANC in Gauteng earlier on Tuesday called on Zuma to "do the right
thing".

The province, however, stopped short of saying that it wanted Zuma to step
down as leader. This was despite a source telling News24 and ANC Gauteng
chairperson Paul Mashatile telling the Mail and Guardian that the PEC had
resolved that Zuma should step down.

Ndlovu said the ANC in Mpumalanga was ready to support the ANC and its
leaders.

It told those publicly calling on Zuma to step down to rather express their
views within the structures of the ANC. "During their time we did not write
open letters to express our views, we walked into their offices."

The PEC in the province would formally brief its branches around the
province regarding the decision taken. It would also consult its alliance
partners and society, said Ndlovu.
