ANC Gauteng PEC Isolated

ANC Gauteng provincial structures yesterday disassociated themselves from
the provincial executive committee (PEC) resolution which stopped short of
calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

Yesterday the ANC Gauteng leagues, Youth, Women, Veterans and MK Military
Veterans Association held a joint press briefing where they unanimously
resolved to allow Zuma to finish his term in office.

The stance by the leagues and veterans association lay bare divisions in the
ANC in Gauteng.

A PEC member told The New Age that during the discussion people were singing
for their suppers. "There was no robust discussion on the matter. People
just agreed because they don't want to lose their jobs," the member, who
wished to remain anonymous, said.

ANCWL provincial secretary, Nonosi Mallalose, said they didn't agree with
the PEC resolution that Zuma must do more than an apology. "We want to make
it clear that we support Zuma until he finishes his term. We have consulted
with our structures and came to a conclusion to support him," she said.

Broke ranks

The Gauteng PEC has broken ranks with its counterparts in Mpumalanga,
Eastern Cape, North West, KZN and Free State who have accepted Zuma's
apology unconditionally and backed him to see out his presidential term.

ANCYL Gauteng chairperson, Matome Chiloane, the league accepted Zuma's
apology and also agreed with the ConCourt ruling that he should pay back the
money spent on his homestead in Nkandla. "The president must pay and we
appreciate the final closure of this matter as it has dragged on for far too
long, creating a circus out of Parliament. It is in this regard we call upon
society to accept the apology and error of judgment," Chiloane said.

"It is therefore shocking to hear high priests during the media briefing say
they don't accept the apology of the president. Since when did the Bible
teach non-forgiveness? Shockingly the individuals who today teach
non-forgiveness forgave the racist and blood-thirsty apartheid architects,
yet today they can't forgive a man whose fundamental error is non payment."

MKMVA provincial chairperson Daddy Thinane said the PEC should clarify what
was the right thing to do.
