New Age2.png SADTU Welcomes Education Indaba Montsho Matlala, The New Age, Johannesburg, 14 April 2016 The SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in the province has welcomed the call made by the alliance summit to hold an education indaba next month. SADTU said this following its ordinary provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting held in Polokwane last week. "We believe that the indaba will provide an appropriate platform for all stakeholders to make meaningful contribution in educational matters. This will make everyone to take responsibility and arrest the polemics of name calling," the union's provincial secretary, Matome Raphasha, said. Matome Raphasha.jpg The union said it had identified the re-emergence of racism in some schools in which language was used as a barrier. "The majority of these schools are reneging on the implementation of incremental introduction of African languages. "They remain enclaves to preserve the laager mentality," Raphasha said. Privatisation is corruption The union's PEC also noted the mushrooming of private schools in the province and said the tendency was deplorable. "We reiterate our call that education is a public tool and therefore cannot be commodified. "The PEC resolved to intensify the campaign on this issue. Privatisation of education is corruption of the highest order," SADTU said in a statement. SADTU also lashed out at the department of education for returning R470m to the Treasury because posts in the department could not be filled. The department has since promised to fill all vacant and funded promotional posts which were advertised this year. The department said it used most of its R27.2bn allocation for 2016-17 on norms and standards, pupils, teachers support material, ICT systems, and examination security as well as provision of school infrastructure projects.
