New Age2.png Valhalla mosque sparks racist storm Lillian Selapisa, The New Age, Johannesburg, 14 April 2016 The handing over of land meant for a the construction of a mosque in Valhalla in Centurion by the city of Tshwane has erupted into a barrage of racist posts on social media by some residents opposed to the facility. The handover event was marred by threats from members opposing the development with violence and Islamophobia posts. Valhalla, April 2016.jpg Some residents shared ideas on social media, including WhatsApp and Twitter, on how to ensure that the building plans faltered. "All we have to do is soil the ground with pigs making it public that they can't construct a mosque on soiled ground," a resident named Lana said. Loud Christian music during Friday prayers? Another resident Shirley Peck suggested that residents play "Christian music as loud as possible" on Fridays during midday prayers by devotees of the mosque. The Thaba Tshwane Islamic Centre Trust, which had been spearheading the mosque campaign, said it remained unshaken by the "racist" few who were trying to derail the process. "They are not going to stop us. We remain committed to making a contribution to the community of Valhalla," the deputy chairperson of the centre, Junaid Ismail, said. "Our right to follow our religion should be respected. They expect us to change our way of living for them, that we will not do," he said. Some Muslim residents took to social media to speak out against the racial attacks. Farid tweeted: "Who knew that allowing a #ValhallaMosque will not only benefit Muslims, but also expose the vile racists that live in that area". Another resident @AhmedJazbhay said: "Afrikaner extremists opposing #ValhallaMosque are blinded by Islamophobia." An application by the Al Mazahir Muslim organisation to build a mosque in Atholl Oaklands was also met with opposition from residents.
