DPRK offers to stop testing the ‘Dagger of Destruction’

Wants an end to annual 300,000-man US-South military exercises

The Morning Star, London, 25 April 2016

As the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea tested a submarine-launched
missile this weekend, the Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong offered to halt
nuclear weapons tests if the US ceases military exercises with the south.

The northern Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA) said hereditary leader Kim
Jong Un watched the launch of the ballistic missile near the coastal town of
Sinpo on Saturday (pictured). KCNA called it a “dagger of destruction” to
strike at Pyongyang’s enemies.

In response, US State Department spokesman John Kirby announced travel
restrictions on Mr Ri, who was in New York for a United Nations meeting on
sustainable development.

During his visit, Mr Ri said his government would be willing to stop nuclear
tests if the US and South Korea end their annual joint military exercises in
preparation for war with the north, involving 300,000 personnel this year.

Questioning US claims to be defending South Korea, Mr Ri said: “A country as
small as the DPRK cannot actually be a threat to the US or to the world.”

He also dismissed the UN security council’s recent ramping-up of sanctions,
saying: “If they believe they can actually frustrate us with sanctions, they
are totally mistaken. The more pressure you put on to something, the more
emotionally you react to stand up against it.”

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the proposal was “not worth
considering.”

On Friday Seoul rejected an offer by Pyongyang to allow relatives of 13
recently “defected” workers from Korean restaurants in China to visit them
in the south. Pyongyang claims the émigrés were abducted.
