New Age2.png EFF mob burns homes Mashatile "calls upon" police to make his problem go away Lillian Selapisa, The New Age, Johannesburg, 27 April 2016 More than 50 RDP houses were vandalised in Villa Lisa, Ekurhuleni, only hours after they were handed over, a move that was suspected to be politically motivated and would set the government back in delivering houses in the province, the Gauteng department of human settlements said yesterday. The department says 37 people were allocated houses on Monday but some community members were not happy with the allocation. "Certain political party" (EFF) The residents allegedly returned the same night, led by the local leadership of a "certain political party" and vandalised 52 houses. The mob also tried to burn two of the houses. Four houses and more than six cars belonging to people who worked in the Villa Lisa human settlements project were burnt after some community members linked to a political party said there was corruption in the housing allocation. Human settlements MEC Paul Mashatile said some of the houses allocated were for vulnerable members of society, including the elderly and childheaded households. He said the torching of property belonging to people who worked in the project was a setback to creating local employment. "The government employs people who live in the communities because they have a better understanding of the issues and they can also benefit from economic opportunities created when we build house. Burning the houses will deter skilled people from helping their communities," he said. Mashatile does a "call upon" Those accused of the vandalism are from Ulundi and Silahla informal settlements. Mashatile has called on law enforcement agencies to swiftly arrest those responsible for the outrageous act. "The department has an open door policy to listen to all the complaints of residents regardless of their political affiliation," he said. [email protected] -- -- You are subscribed.
