COSAS Welcomes Newly Appointed MEC of Education in KZN

and wishes Students well as Exams commence

The Congress of South African Students unreservedly welcomes the new
appointment of Mthandeni Dlungwani as the MEC of education in the KwaZulu
Natal Province. The student's movement welcomes this move as it promises to
come with new developments in the deteriorating state of education in the
said province.

The KwaZulu- Natal Province currently forms part of the three bottom
provinces in performance nationally. The province remains with the
consequences of the group copying saga cloud hanging over its head, the lack
of proper infrastructure in schools mostly the ones located in rural areas,
slow pace in implementation of the paperless classroom and lack of adequate
subject advisors in certain districts. Other challenges facing the education
sector in the province include scholar transport due to the better part of
it being rural and having areas located far from schools. The province is
also marred by various social ills including high teenage pregnancy, HIV
Infections, drug abuse and general violence.

As a student's movement we are confident that Dlungwani a former youth
leader is equal to the task and will be able to come up with new strategies
to turn around the state of education in the province, understanding that
education does not exist outside of social ills and various backgrounds
which learners come from that are often unfavourable. Education is a
societal issue which will require that the MEC and his official collective
work closely with stakeholders in education. The Congress of South African
Students is ready to work with the MEC, whom is a great match to the kind of
leadership that the big province with a high number of school's needs. We
appreciate the work by out-gone MEC of Education Ms. Peggy Nkonyeni, she
indeed left footprint of her own.

The student's movement wishes well the students who will be commencing with
their mid-year examinations today. We encourage all students to work hard
and strive for academic excellence. We believe and trust that the
matriculants have been making us proud so far nationally and will produce
convincing results which will be able to guarantee them space to study in
higher tertiary institutions for 2017. We encourage all matriculants to
apply now for 2017 study year in higher institutions of learning, regardless
of their financial background as they stand a chance of getting financial
assistance to study if they are accepted.
