ANC Statement, 14 June 2016

Constitutional Court Matter between Khan and Others and IEC

The African National Congress welcomes the judgment of the Constitutional
Court delivered today, 14 June 2016, on the matter of Khan & Others v the
IEC related to the registration of voters and the details of the voters'
roll.

We appreciate the sensitivity of the Constitutional Court to the need to
balance the guarantee of participation in the upcoming elections by all
citizens of the Republic whilst instructing the IEC to improve its data
capturing systems. This judgment reaffirms the ANC's long held view that in
our democratic dispensation no citizen would be denied the hard won right to
vote or in any way be disenfranchised.

The ANC acknowledges and supports the need for improvements in the
collection and registration of personal details of all voters, in particular
residential addresses, in preparation for all elections. Whilst we
appreciate that all registered voters will be able to cast their votes for
the parties of their choice on the 3rd August 2016, we further implore all
our people to diligently follow up with the IEC to ensure that they are
accurately registered in the National Voters' Roll beyond these elections.
The IEC must urgently develop a systematic program that will encourage this
process.

The African National Congress remains committed to upholding the integrity
of our Electoral process and as we welcome this judgment, we view its
directives as an opportunity to further improve the credible, free and fair
nature that has characterized our elections.
