Education MEC Martha Bartlett said yesterday the department would create
mentorship training programmes for teachers and conduct regular workshops
with them.

Bartlett was delivering her closing remarks at the education summit in
Kimberley yesterday. She said her mission was to increase the quality of
education in the province and also ensure that the standard of teaching is
improved.

"We will provide in-service theory and practice training coupled with
mentorship for all our teachers.

"We will ensure that schools streamline subject offerings to optimally
utilise all teachers and ensure regular up-skilling on utilisation of
resources.

"We will provide opportunities for pupils, especially in rural areas, with
access to higher education through the availability of bursaries,"

Bartlett said. Bartlett said the department would monitor the resources of
schools and ensure effective retrieval systems and provide on-going
training, monitoring and support in terms of the Annual National
Assessments.

She said assessments should be done every three years which would provide
ample time for intervention.

"We will look into the condition of services for Grade R practitioners;
develop strategic partnerships with the industries to source adequate
funding and to continue improving the quality of our teachers. "We will
review SGB powers and provide continuous training on policy matters and
strengthen community involvement in the quality learning and teaching
campaign," Bartlett said.

She said the quality learning and teaching campaign will be based in the
office of the MEC and they would appoint a dedicated official per district
who will be responsible for overseeing the campaign.

Bartlett said they would develop school-specific training and capacitate
SGB's to draft business plans.

The department will also encourage the business sector to invest in schools
and contribute towards the quality of education. "High ranking politicians
and government officials will be visiting all underperforming schools in the
province. "We will support sporting activities at school level, builds good
morals and values in a child and contributes positively to the development
of all our pupils.

"Officials will also conduct site inspections at all school hostels to
assess the safety and conduciveness for accommodating pupils and teachers,"
she said.
