'Professionals should lead transformation'

Minister Zwane calls on PPF to be in forefront of this in mining sector

The Progressive Professionals Forum (PPF) has challenged professionals in
the province to be at the forefront of transformation in the mining sector.

This came after Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane called on the PPF
to get its act together and lead from the front.

Zwane recently addressed the forum and called on professionals to be leaders
in tackling lack of transformation in the mining sector. The minister argued
that professionals should not be occupied in theorising but should be
practical in addressing the challenges of poverty, inequality and
unemployment in SA. PPF is a body of professionals who cut across the racial
and cultural divides in the country. North West PPF convenor Sediko Rakolote
said that the forum subscribed to the objectives of the Freedom Charter and
the Constitution of South Africa. "Our members are guided by the spirit of
ploughing back their skills and expertise to inculcate patriotism among the
South Africans and their vision is to become the think tank of South
Africa."

Rakolote said that Chapter 2 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources
Development Act, 2002 said that mineral and petroleum resources were the
common heritage of all the people of SA and the state was the custodian
thereof for the benefit of all South Africans.

"Minister Zwane is empowered by the act to be the custodian of the mineral
resources of the country on behalf of the state. He will always have a
reliable ally in the PPF in crafting policy positions that will contribute
towards the transformation of the perennial legacy of apartheid and the
continuing socioeconomic disparities that continue to blight the length and
breadth of our country, in particular the mining sector."

Rakolote said the forum was committed to galvanising its members and other
interested members to make inputs in the revision of the Mining Charter to
ensure that it addressed transformation.

"The journey to transformation has to be taken by all professionals so that
we begin to influence the direction the country has to take.

"Members of the forum and the community at large will be asked to submit
their inputs on the mining charter to [email protected] or joe.
[email protected]," Rakolote said.

Professionals in North West who want to submit information are urged to do
so urgently. The closing day is tomorrow.
