MKMVA says Gordhan must uphold the law

Canny Maphanga, The New Age, Johannesburg, 30 August 2016

Pressure is mounting on embattled Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to comply
with a request from the Hawks for a meeting on the alleged spy unit in the
SA Revenue Services (SARS).

Yesterday, the Umkhonto we Sizwe Miltary Veterans Association (MKMVA) Kebby
Maphatsoe, speaking at a briefing in Johannesburg, said that Gordhan must
uphold the rule of law.

He said: "The National Treasury has not been captured, all departments
account to the president. If Gordhan has nothing to hide then he should be
able to submit himself to the state institution that is the Hawks." The
MKMVA leader also urged Gordhan to emulate the conduct of late president
Nelson Mandela when it came to respecting the laws of the country.

"Gordhan must follow the example of great leaders like Mandela who have also
been subjected to state institutions like the Hawks" he said.

The MKMVA described Gordhan's actions and behaviour as "malicious" and laced
with a hidden political agenda.

The MKMVA treasurer general Des van Rooyen says the probe into Gordhan had
nothing to do with President Jacob Zuma. He said: "These investigations
started when Gordhan was SARS commissioner and his actions then."

Van Rooyen also questioned Gordhan's motives for running to the media first
with statements.

"Why seek sympathy points by running to the media? An investigation has been
done and questions need to be answered, now anyone who needs to answer these
questions must subject himself. Go and answer The Hawks on the allegations,
not the media," Van Rooyen said.

Maphatsoe also came to the defence of Zuma. He said the Hawks probe must not
be treated as a political agenda.

He said the "state-capture" agenda that Zuma was embroiled in, stemmed from
those who "don't want the ANC to transform the economy of this country".

"Is finance or treasury different from any other department? Because all
departments must account to the president," Maphatsoe said.

Maphatsoe said all are equal before the law and must be treated as such.
