SADTU accuses DA of

'playing to the gallery'

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) general secretary
Mugwena Maluleke yesterday accused the DA of "playing to the gallery"
following an attempt by the party to haul the union before Parliament over
the Jobs for Cash scandal.

"We take this as a political gimmick. The report never said SADTU was
selling posts," Maluleke said.

The Jobs for Cash report released in May this year said there was evidence
of at least 38 cases of buying and selling teaching posts involving SADTU
members.

The report also talked of the deployment of SADTU members into powerful
administrative positions, despite not having the requisite skills.

It also reported on SADTU's capture of six out of the nine provincial
education departments.

"The bribery and corruption in the Jobs for Cash report cannot be put down
to a few isolated incidents.

"As the report shows, it is the logical consequence of a dominant union that
abuses its dominance to advance itself at the expense of our children," DA
education spokesperson Gavin Davis said yesterday.

He said that SADTU president Mogope Maphila must account to Parliament for
his union's role in the Jobs for Cash bribery and corruption racket.

"In particular, he must commit to taking action against all SADTU members
implicated and put in place measures to prevent the buying and selling of
teachers' posts in the future," Davis said.

He said the Basic Education Portfolio Committee must ensure that justice is
done in the SADTU Jobs for Cash corruption scandal.

He condemned Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

"On May 27 she failed to appear before the Portfolio Committee to discuss
the report's findings.

"Furthermore, she is yet to set out her position on the recommendations
contained in the report despite being given the opportunity to do so in
Parliament last week," Davis said.

"We hope this is not a signal that Minister Motshekga has gone soft on
SADTU. It would be unfortunate for the minister to prioritise her party's
historical ties with SADTU over the future of South Africa's children."

Davis confirmed that he had asked the chair of the National Assembly Basic
Education committee Nomalungelo Gina to summon SADTU to a meeting.
