In addition to what Cde VC writes, which I totally agree with, I would underline that those who are agitating for such a conference are quiet about what it shall consult about that is not now being discussed in the formal structures from branch up and Head Office down. Secondly, the whole idea is distracting attention from the building of the new local councils both where the organisation is in control but as critical where it is not in control. How does the discussion empower our councillors as they go about council work especially in the changing/changed situation? The DA will be systematically and skilfully destroying even the moderate gains we have achieved in building democratic local government. They will be building a structure and machinery of local government in their image. Thirdly, we shall in fact not be analysing the election outcomes in a sober and "scientific" way at all. After all, we think we already know exactly why the movement is losing/has lost its way and can rectify the problem through a consultative and chest-beating prayer service and many shouts of Amandla. It is painful to see the poverty in the analysis of the social changes in the country even among communists. Social changes influenced critically by changes in both local and "global" economic conditions. Lastly. Most advocates of the consultative conference like Pityana say it should be organised by a Task Team of Veterans of the movement because the current leadership has failed. Who will establish this task team? Pityana or Cde Mashatile, and whence will they derive their authority? Who will be eligible to attend? Those the task team invites? These are not idle questions. It is now a generally accepted fact that much of the agitation is a factional contest that has infected the movement as a microcosm of society. If it cannot "renew" itself it cannot be "renewed" by self-appointed high priests with massive bank account balances. It has to rely on work done in the branches following the democratic processes even in the poisoned environment in which we find ourselves. A luta continua!
