Morning Star.png High Court Blocks Closure of Private Tin-Shack Schools But Riep Report is to be launched in Kampala on 5 October James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 26 September 2016 Uganda's chain of tin-shack schools bankrolled by the world's richest man will reopen today after the High Court overruled the government. Justice Patricia Basaza Wasswa granted an interim order allowing Bridge International Academies (BIA) to open its 63 fee-paying schools with some 12,000 pupils for the start of term. The order runs until October 3 when the dispute between the Education Ministry and the firm will be heard in court. Education Minister Janet Museveni ordered the schools to close on August 25 as they did not meet minimum standards for sanitation, employed unqualified teachers and were not following the national curriculum. Transnational BIA, a major player in the growing low-cost private education business in Africa and India, lists tycoons including Microsoft's Bill Gates, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Ebay's Pierre Omidyar among its financial backers - along with Britain's Department for International Development. Curtis Riep's Report World teaching union federation Education International (EI) will release a report into BIA's Uganda operations by Canadian researcher Curtis Riep on October 5. EI affiliates from Kenya and Liberia - which privatised its entire primary education system into BIA's hands in January - and South Africa and Senegal will be present. Mr Riep was arrested - and promptly released - by Ugandan police in May at the request of BIA during what they had told him was an interview with company executives. The firm had previously run newspaper "wanted" adverts with Mr Riep's photo, alleging that he was impersonating a BIA employee and implying he was a threat to pupils' welfare.
