Dear Comrades,
The Union has noted with concern, that there has been an increase in
violence at our schools, directed at both Educators, Support staff and
Learners. These acts of violence includes, shooting in and around education
institutions, attacks on educator and support staff and violence directed at
our learners at school, and when they travel to and from their respective
institutions.
In the fourth quarter of 2016 there were 33 incidents of gang violence, 134
incidents of abuse and 14 incidents of trauma reported to the WCED. We are
firmly of the belief that all employers have a responsibility to protect its
employees from violence and secure their safety at the workplace. Hence we
are calling on all employers to fulfil their legislative responsibility. We
further want to express the fact that the interest of the child is paramount
and guaranteed in our Constitution which need to be adhered to by all in
society.
The union has a strong view that schools are Community assets and should be
places of learning and teaching therefore it should be free of violence.
Quality Education is firmly established on the principles of respect,
tolerance and non-violence. We further believe that communities should
zealously protect these principles.
In the light of attacks on the educators, supports staff and learners, SADTU
is advancing the following plan of action to highlight our rejection of
violence in our schools.
Day of Action: Wednesday, 26 April 2017
Phase 1
All schools to hold pickets for 30 minutes before school commences on
Wednesday, 26 April 2017.
Phase 2
We are requesting teachers to use 5 min of their lesson time to incorporate
the principles of non violence, tolerance and respect.
Phase 3
Teachers, Support staff and Learners to hold placard demonstrations inside
the school grounds during 1st interval, calling for violence-free schools
and communities.
We are requesting schools to inform the parents of the planned programme
envisaged for 26 April 2017 and seek permission for their learners to
participate.
Our request is that we flood all social media with your pics on #SADTU and
#We want safe schools and communities, to popularise our plight.
This is the start of the campaign, lets fight violence in our schools and
community together.
Yours for safe school
Jonavon Rustin
Provincial Secretary
