The Main Issue in the French Presidential Election: National Sovereignty

Fifty years ago, it was "the left" whose most ardent cause was support for
Third World national liberation struggles. The left's heroes were Ahmed Ben
Bella, Sukarno, Amilcar Cabral, Patrice Lumumba, and Ho Chi Minh. They were
fighting to liberate their countries from Western imperialism. They were
fighting for independence, for the right to determine their own way of life,
preserve their own customs, and decide their own future. They were fighting
for national sovereignty. The left supported that struggle. But now, the
left has been won over to a new imperialism under the banner of "human
rights" and "antiracism".* -

Teachers: Stop Funds For Shack Schools

Teachers urged the World Bank yesterday to stop funding a chain of
private-sector tin shack schools across Africa. Unions led by global
federations Education International (EI) and Public Services International
marched on the bank's Washington headquarters to demand that it stop giving
loans to Bridge International Academies (BIA).*

*Bankrolled by the world's richest man, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, along
with Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg and eBay's Pierre Omidyar, BIA aims to
dominate education in Africa and India with its "low-fee" private schools.

Communists Ease Personal Attacks On Under-Fire Zuma

South Africa's communists warned against focusing exclusively on President
Jacob Zuma on Thursday after the ANC closed ranks. SACP general secretary
Blade Nzimande told a 1,000-strong shop stewards' council in Johannesburg:
"Issues around President Jacob Zuma should not be personalised."

"Though we are saying it is appropriate for the president to step aside, we
can't turn it into an anti-Zuma campaign."

The SACP was the first ANC ally to demand Mr Zuma's resignation last month
over his sacking of finance minister Pravin Gordhan. Trade union federation
COSATU followed. -

Western Powers 'Give Up On Diplomatic Resolution'

Speaking at a press conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in
Kazakhstan's capital Astana yesterday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said
those governments had given "no explanations" for their opposition to an
investigation.

Mr Lavrov said: "It's obvious that false information about the use of
chemical weapons by the Syrian government is being used to move away from
implementing [Security Council] Resolution 2254," - the 2015 UN pact which
committed nations to support peace talks between the Syrian government and
insurgents, who were supposed to break their alliances with Isis and
al-Qaida terrorists. -
