Because the inbox was, unfortunately, poorly thought out, badly
designed, confusing to lots of people. It's statically generated, but I
can't tell who is reading what, so we spend a LOT of time
regenerating/cleaning/regenerating things uselessly. People tend to
subscribe to popular tags and get tens of thousands of items per day,
which they can't possibly read. Even the name was badly chosen - the
amount of support questions on this alone is insane/So on and so forth.
I'm trying to split out the two modes of use -- subscribing to people,
and subscribing to tags. Behavior is significantly bimodal; some people
sub to tags, some to people, mixing both is relatively rare. The
user/tag subscriptions are very rarely used.
Instead I'm trying to lay the groundwork for better functionality,
backed up with a better implementation (now, if you remove someone,
their stuff dissapears immediately! Stuff appears immediately too! Etc)
and will be continuing to try to make it better and more useful and so
on.
I'm sorry if this means not keeping things exactly the same, forever,
but I think this is an overall improvement.
