Hey Matthew, I'm the PM working on the firefox extension for del.icio.us. Sorry about the delay in responding. We are working on a solution for this issue, though it's not exactly as you describe. We're planning on providing the ability to retain the original FF bookmarks toolbar and keeping it alongside the del.icio.us toolbar. This way you can keep your livemarks in one and recently bookmarked in the other. There's a fairly vigorous debate in the 'delicious-firefox-extension' group if you'd like to participate.
