Where are you noticing private items in a public feed? Bookmarks that have been set to private shouldn't be showing up in RSS feeds (except the "links for you" secret feed), but the feeds don't update immediately, so a bookmark set to private might take up to an hour or so to disappear (usually a minute or two, though).
I always add a "*private" tag manually so I don't lose private items in my sea of public items, but something automatic like this is on our todo list.
